In the article, How Can You Create Fiction When Reality Comes to Call, Carolyn Chute writes about how her day usually is. With all the distraction around her, she can barely focus on her writing. She explains how writing is like meditation or like dreaming. But with life and everything around her going on, you’re not going to find your way to your subconscious. But in the article, 6 ways to be a Hemingway-Level productive badass, the writer Drake Baer explain how Hemingway focused on his writing. He writes about the different techniques Hemingway did to write. Hemingway would stand at his typewriter rather than sit. Hemingway would also write his work and look over it before typing up his work. He found many ways to keep him focused.
I can relate to Carolyn Chute because as a college student who has to write papers, I easily get distracted with my surroundings. For example, trying to do homework and suddenly my dog barks and I am curious to why she is barking, so I step away from what I’m doing to go look. I would have to be in a quiet closed room with no distractions to get anything done. The littlest sound would even bother me. My writing has never really been the best. I’m always rushing or just so distracted I write down anything just to get it out the way. I lose focus and don’t remember what I was thinking or typing. I do believe that I can become a better writer if I just took my time and focus hard. My work shows how much I slack and how much I really try and I think that I can always do better, I just need to take that extra step and make it happen.

Six steps that I can use to become a better writer:
- Find a quiet and closed room with no distractions
- Focus. Try to relax and go into my own world.
- Stand instead of sitting. If I’m standing I can’t get tired or bored easily.
- Wake up early when the earth is like still. Everyone is sleeping, no cars are moving. Nothing but silence to help me focus.
- Get myself energized and interested. I tend to get bored very easily, so if I can find something exciting to write about, that should keep me focused.
- Put 100% effort into what I’m doing or writing.
